Going down To Evansville for Christmas took me within sight of two Duke Energy coal fired plants - one along the Wabash south of Terre Haute and the other just outside of Petersburg on the White River - both had a wind drivn smoke plume that stretched across the Hoosier sky - a light brown dingy color to it. I believe that clean coal is a possibility if Duke Energy and the other BIG energy companies are made to adhere to clean air standards for emissions. As long as they have the lobbyists with their bags of money briebing our legislators - that will never happen. We will not have clean air, clean water, or safe food to eat unless we make changes in Congress.
Squatlo, Me too, and we could eliminate those slurry ponds of fly ash from burning coal by putting it on playgrounds just wet it down with some fracking backwash.
Sarge, Duke is a funny case. On the one hand they recently got permission to close two Indiana (I don't know which) coal fired plants which were the oldest and among the worst, they also have put up some wind farms, but they do also lobby as you say. As far as utilities, they are about as nice as they come, but, they should not be the nicest, there should be many utilities moving (even if slowly) to fix this crap, and I wish it were that they were the butt end rather than the front end of the (almost) good guys.
I vote for Clean Coal!
