Nike, Puma, Adidas are the giants of sports wear for the foot, and sports wear has morphed into everyday wear. But, the shit is poision in it's manufacture process, on your foot, and you soak it up yes folks your body's a sponge. Lastly, its still poison when you pitch it in the lake.
A few months ago, Greenpeace launched an attack on all three shoe makers after they all rejected their requests to get the toxins out. Publicity, protests, email complaints and some limited boycotts worked. A few days ago Puma broke ranks from the shoe cartel. This week Nike did the same, announcing it's plan to detox it's products in the coming year. Adidas now is alone, and will have to do the same, the other two will begin to advertise their poison vapor free shoes next year.
Now if Greenpeace could just do something about the sewage spill in the GOP race.
If it makes you feel better (about Nader) Gore actually won Florida anyway. It was the Supreme Court that blocked the vote count which would have demonstrated that. So blame them. Five of them, anyway. ; )

ReplyDeleteThe shoes are full of plastics, composites, nylons, synthetics and glues of a witches brew. THere are alternatives, they can get the toxins out of these materials, and the shoe makers know it, the only reason they are agreeing.

ReplyDeleteI don't know if toxin free shoes will cost more, currently the manufacturing cost in Asia is from 2 to $15 a pair, we pay 50 to $150 for it. Using different products or processes may or may not drive up cost, I know that in my experience in manufacturing (but not shoes) sometimes you end up with a cost reduction following a change. At any rate, I would guess the costs may indeed go up, but the health of all of us has a value, and a closet full of juniors shoes weeping chemicals into his body is too high a cost already, certainly some of our behavioral and health issues are related to these as Sarge pointed out.

ReplyDeleteFormaldahyde is one of the few chemicals in shoes that we can smell, at least when it is fresh, or still outgassing. Walk into a cheap self serve shoe store and the smell about knocks you over. It's in the other stores to, but they often store their shoes in another room or it's part of a larger airconditioned facility dispersing the smell.
