"In consideration of pleasures"

Part way through a block of limestone.  Still lots of work to do on this new sculpture,  done in batches of 15 minutes or an hour each evening, hope to be finished before Thanksgiving.  My plan for the hair is going to be a lot of work.  Will post a final pic when done.

I love it, but is your sculpture celebrating America's obesity crisis? :^)

  3. Whit,
No, the arms and shoulders are so strong because I was working with a goal given me by a lady that teaches sculpting. The goal was to use all the stone, as much of it as possible. In other words make a sculpture with as little stone removal as possible. The outer shape of the arms and hair are in large part following the shape of the stone I started with.

  4. Hey, that's way cool! I've never tried sculpting anything, it might be my hidden gift. 'Course, I've never tried playing a cello either...

  5. At this stage, it has a Henry Moore feel to it:

  6. Darrel,
As I have told you before - I had no damned idea. Maybe you didn't either back then....

  7. Squatlo,
go to the garage, get a hammer and a cold chisel and find a rock to hit. That's what I did, self taught, never a lesson, finally bought some real rock carving tools after I proved to myself I could do it. I am going to a shop once a week to work with others, we trade ideas and tools and lies.

    Jadedj,
I would like Henry Moore's work better if most of it wasn't owned by the Koch brothers. There are a few sculptures around much like this one, person leaning on elbows, one I really like is a guy on one elbow with a coffe cup in the other hand. Anyhow, so the idea is somewhat pilfered. Picasso said good artist borrow, great artist steal.

    Ron,
I didn't know I could do this until the day my son drove off to college, I stood in the garage, there was a stone on the bench, not sure from where, I hit it with a hammer a few times and it looked like a face, grabbed a chisel and in a few hours had a head, it's actually pretty good, on the bar in the basement.
