“How can we be so arrogant? The planet is, was, and always will be stronger than us. We can't destroy it; if we overstep the mark, the planet will simply erase us from its surface and carry on existing. Why don't they start talking about not letting the planet destroy us?”
― Paulo Coelho, The Winner Stands Alone
That's really it. When we have pushed the atmosphere and the oceans out of the narrow band of chemical and temperature tolerances known to them for millions of years, the earth will be unfit for most of the current plants and animals. The 3rd great extinction. The anthropocene will peter out in an empty concrete lined urban riverbed.
Picture above: dust storm, Arizona, 2012, once rare, the last couple of years have seen a number of them. Can you say harbinger?

Sarge,
ReplyDeleteI have been swamped with spam on the blog. I was getting 10 to 20 comments a day from anonymous, every one was leaving advertisements and links to pay day loans, mail order meds, herbal magic cure drinks, secret ways to make free calls, all kinds of crap like that. I am surprised you are not getting that as well. When I only got one a day I was just deleting them, but the last couple weeks it went nuts, every few minutes I got a post. If I look at my stats, I was getting more visits from Russia than anywhere else, I suspect the robots hanging these adds are in Russia.
Maybe we should accelerate our pace. If we hurry, maybe we can extinct ourselves, the planet can heal, and the whole cycle can start over again. There should be another almost 5 Billion years available before the Sun conks out ...
