Gated community? Maybe not all of it.

When middle class jobs dry up, when rural towns cave in till the only jobs are driving dump trucks for the county, and the politicians promote a gun culture or when being smart and well educated is no longer cool, then like Indiana, your going to get meth labs and gangs, dog fights, and violence the small town cops were never trained to handle.  This book is a kick in the guts, it's bleak.

  1. I think the worst job in American right now is to be that Sheriff Taylor and Deputy Fife out there in a one stop light town, no back up, no real training, no legal advice.

  2. Darrel,
I will get that book. My home town and future abode and likely resting place - Evansville, is the, meth capital of Indiana. Over Christmas my cousin and her 30 yr old son showed up - he had long black hair, funny looking eyes, and rotten teeth - meth mouth. The rural cops are useless - When Kim, her old man, and son got busted - It was Indiana State Police. Her old man did like a year in county - She did almost six months - and the kid went off to a youth village (aka juvenile coorrection facility) for a long while.
I told them to move back to Evansville - hiring is up. Nope - they are staying close to their source.

It isn't just down south - shit, it is all over here in Indiana. Now, I haven't heard of dog fights - not that isn't going on. Theft, robbery, and killings are up.
As much as I hate doing so - I may buy a handgun after I get down there.

    Ron

  3. I'm sure this is happening in a lot of small towns where production has stopped and people have come across hard times. I'm sure this is happening in western Pennsylvania too, as more of our steel comes from China rather than Pittsburgh.
