Riveter Rosie can climb a wind mill and wire in a solar panel.

  • Women are underrepresented in the green economy, holding just 29.5 percent of green jobs compared to 48 percent of the total U.S. workforce
  • Women’s estimated median earnings are higher in the green economy than in the overall economy ($38,486 compared to $35,574)
  • The gender wage gap is lower in the green economy than in the overall economy (18 percent compared to 22 percent, for 2008-2010)
  • The distribution of jobs in the green economy is more concentrated in industries that typically employ more men than women, including manufacturing, construction, transportation, warehousing and utilities
  • Women’s share of green jobs is expected to stay low since the occupations that are projected to see the most growth are traditionally held by men (heating and air conditioning technicians, carpenters and electricians)

  1. Darrel,
Some woman is going to climb up on a wind mill and change out a gear? Is she physically capable? I seen that in the Air Force - WAFs couldn't drag their tool boxes.
And, outside in the elements - Up at KI Sawyer in '76-'77 - I was chasing a slightly plump auburn haired sheet metal mechanic on F-106s.
Now, being fair - working outside on the ramp in the winter in Upper Michigan likely isn't a pleasant job - She told me about sticking hands down in her pants to get them warm - "Don't you burn off those finger tips". She was pre- Sharon Kay.
Now, for the record - I have worked with and had work for me some of the best lady air traffic controllers there are. Stephanie at Tyndall tower now is at O'Hare.

Conditions, and physical strength have to play a role in job assignments...

    1. They climb up inside on a ladder with a safety line attached to an elevator fall stop brake , they carry almost nothing with them. Anything over about 10 pounds is pulled up by a cable winch, inside the nacelle (the box at the top where the turbine/generator and electronics are there is an internal crane. There are more jobs than gear changing up there, lots of electronics, instrumentation, inspecting for wear, oiling, cleaning.
