I was there in June, visiting my brother in the Air Force. It gets REALLY cold (Interior, you know), and it's about four-five hours from Denali Natl Park and Mt. McKinley (and some of the most beautiful natural scenery on earth). Seven-eight hours gets your relative to Anchorage...another beautiful city.
But. It's cold. And really dark for a few months out of the year.
My wife and I were there on July 4th a few years ago. Since it was still daylight late at night during the fireworks, the display was not very spectacular. The daytime temperature was in the 70s. Be prepared to suffer the cold during the winter.
